I've Lost My Pet

Panhandle Humane Society provides impound services for Scottsbluff, Gering, Terrytown, Mitchell, Morrill, Minatare and all of Scotts Bluff County. If your pet has gone missing, we're here to help you return him/her to your family.

We are available during regular business hours, which are from 1 pm - 4 pm every day of the week. Panhandle Humane Society is closed on Easter, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

We encourage guardians of lost pets to check the shelter at least every 24 hours to see if your animal is here. One visit or phone call and you could miss your animal's arrival by 5 minutes. Telephone information alone may not be sufficient to identify your animal. Often, physical descriptions that we receive do not match what our staff sees or how they would describe an animal. We urge you to visit the shelter in person to positively identify your animal. Bringing a current photo will help with identification. Your visit could help expedite a reunion with your pet, as animals often lose their collars and tags and you know exactly what your animal looks like. If your animal is at Panhandle Humane Society, he or she will be held for three business days, not including the day they arrive. [There may be a behavior or medical reason, for the health and safety of the animal or the other animals in the shelter, that immediate action may need to be taken and the standard 3-day hold may not apply.] After these three days the animal will become property of Panhandle Humane Society. Stray animals that are not claimed by their owner are made available for adoption. If an owner comes in after the stray hold has ended and the animal is still here, they can adopt their animal at our regular adoption fees if they don't have an adoption deposit/hold on them . Animals will be spayed or neutered prior to being adopted. We also recommend calling Communications at 308-632-7176 to report your lost pet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you charge to bring animals in?

We do not charge to bring in a stray animal.

We do charge for animal surrenders and consider this a surrender donation. This helps offset the cost of caring for the animal until they are adopted. We also charge for feral cats that are brought in. This also helps pay for their care while they are at the shelter.

How long do you keep an animal?

We hold stray animals for 3 business days (not including the day they are brought to the shelter) to allow plenty of time for their owner to claim them. Surrenders are held for 24 hours. If an animal is brought in due to the owner being arrested, we send a letter to the owner in jail and the animal is held for 3 days from the date the letter is sent. The owner can designate another person in writing to claim their animal out for them if they will not be released from jail prior to the 3-day hold ending. After each hold period, the animal is given an exam and made available for adoption. As long as the animal is adoptable, it will be here until we find it a forever home!
